Gillies Bay Cottage

The Gillies Bay Cottage exemplifies a harmonious relationship between the built and natural environment. Located on Texada Island, B.C., the year-round vacation home blends in with the character of the small community of Gillies Bay.

Designed for a couple with a request to maximize the potential of the oceanfront site, the one-story building is angled to follow the natural contour of the land and provide expansive views from both indoor and outdoor living spaces. A balance between glass, steel, stone and wood, and a clean-lined aesthetic, results in a contemporary West Coast style.

The building features bright open interiors with multiple connections to exterior verandas. Roofs are positioned over portions of the continuous deck and clerestory windows are located above the porch roofs. The mono-slope main roof allows for high vaulted ceilings which are finished with exposed Douglas fir timber rafters and planking. While these elements are essential to the aesthetic character of the building, they also form the basis of the passive solar design. The resulting product is highly efficient in energy consumption and space utilization.
